The DHST Commission on Science, Technology and Diplomacy is making a call for expressions of interest for participation in a symposium to be held as part of ICHST 2025. This conference is set to be held in New Zealand in a hybrid format, so we are looking for prospective participants who would be able to present either in-person or virtually a paper related to the history of science, technology, or medicine in international relations. Participants wanting to propose a panel within the symposium are also welcome.
The circulation of science, technology, and medicine throughout various periods of history underscores the relevance of observing the connections, synergies, and tensions between different individuals, societies, nations, and institutions when addressing scientific processes. These relations have taken place under different circumstances and under different political regimes, in diverse locations, spaces, and scales, which may have been critical factors in shaping the relations among these actors. This symposium invites scholars to resent their research on diverse subjects that examine from a historical perspective the relationship between science, technology, or medicine, and international affairs.
Contributions may analyze themes including (but not limited to): scientific exploration and failure, environmental narratives, international collaboration or competition, transnational threats, construction/dissolution of networks, technological challenges, among others, in relation to one of more fields of science diplomacy within the contexts of science, technology, and medicine.
Submission Guidelines:
If you want to be part of this symposium, please email Barbara K. Silva to bsilvaa {at} uc {dot} cl AND Gordon Barrett to gordon {dot} barrett {at} manchester {dot} ac {dot} uk with a tentative title and a short explanation of what you intend to present ( <100 words) OR an abstract (<250 words), and brief biography (<100 words) not later than Monday 4 March, 2024. For now, sending an abstract is not mandatory. For those prospective presenters whose papers get accepted for the symposium, we will ask for abstracts in June 2024.
If you would like to propose a panel to be included in the STAND symposium, email us a tentative title and short abstract of the proposed panel (<200 words), and the names, affiliation, and emails of all prospective participants.
Proposals that foster gender-equality and diversity, including researchers with various institutional affiliations, at diverse stages of their professional careers, with different geographical origins, or from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged.
