The Commission on Science, Technology and Diplomacy is pleased to announce that Ezequiel Sosiuk has been selected as recipient of its 2025 Early Career Prize for the paper ‘Diplomatic Concepts: Origins and Consequences of the United States-Brazil Shrimp Conservation Agreement (1972-1977)’. The paper provides a clear historical example of how science can actually structure international agreements and relations, all while demonstrating the limits of the outcome.
Out of an outstanding field of submissions, the Commission also selected for recognition as an Honourable Mention the paper by Jens Amborg on ‘Animal Geopolitics: Race Smuggling and Sheep Diplomacy in Eighteenth-Century Europe’. The paper was an imaginative and enjoyable look into the late 18th Century as a period analyzable in terms of scientific knowledge and interstate relations, i.e. animal geopolitics.
